Every holiday party needs one drink that can be built in under a minute, looks like it took ten, and does not knock anyone out before dinner. A cranberry mocktail checks all three boxes, and the spritz format (a tall, bubbly, lightly tart drink made for slow sipping) is the natural shape for it. The color alone does half the work this time of year, and cranberry’s natural tartness resets the palate between bites of everything rich on the table.
This is exactly the kind of drink we had in mind when writing our Holiday Mocktail Guide: fast, festive, easy to scale, and built without a shaker so you are not performing bar tricks while guests wait.
One ingredient note before the recipe. Buy 100 percent cranberry juice, not the bottle labeled cranberry juice cocktail. The pure stuff is fiercely tart, and that tartness is the point; you control the sweetness yourself with syrup. The pre-sweetened blends taste flat and candyish by comparison, though there is a fix below if that is all your store carries.
Ingredients
- 2 oz 100 percent cranberry juice
- 0.75 oz simple syrup
- 0.5 oz fresh lime juice
- 3 oz chilled sparkling water
- Ice, a rosemary sprig, and a few fresh or sugared cranberries for garnish
Instructions
- Chill everything ahead of time, including the glass if you have fridge space. A spritz built with room-temperature juice goes watery fast.
- Fill a wine glass with ice. Add the cranberry juice, simple syrup, and lime juice, and stir for about ten seconds.
- Top with the sparkling water and give it one gentle stir to combine without killing the bubbles.
- Clap the rosemary sprig between your palms to release its aroma, slide it into the glass, and drop in the cranberries.
If sweetened cranberry juice cocktail is your only option, drop the simple syrup entirely and double the lime juice. It will not be quite as vivid, but it gets close.
Variations
- Pitcher version. Multiply the cranberry, syrup, and lime by eight, chill the base, and top each glass individually with sparkling water. Never add the bubbles to the pitcher.
- Dressed-up version. Swap the sparkling water for a chilled non-alcoholic sparkling wine like Lyre’s Classico Grande. It rounds out the tartness and makes the drink feel like an occasion.
- Spiced syrup. Simmer your simple syrup with a cinnamon stick and two cloves, then cool and strain. Ten extra minutes, and the whole drink tastes like December.
- Citrus lean. Use fresh orange juice in place of the lime for a softer, sweeter profile. If you like that direction, our Winter Citrus Sparkler goes all in on it.
Final Thoughts
The spritz is the workhorse of zero-proof entertaining, and this cranberry version is about as seasonal as it gets. It is also deliberately low in sugar, which matters at a long party: a drink people can have two or three of without feeling like they ate dessert twice is a drink that actually gets finished. Make the base ahead, stack the garnishes in the fridge, and let the drink take credit for effort you barely spent.
